New live work development scheduled for RiNo ~ look out Brighton Boulevard, the city is coming.

Brooke and Tom Gordon are planning on breaking ground in the first quarter of 2015 in RiNo. The mixed use development will include 23 townhouse, 100 condos and 40k square feet of retail space. The units will be high end, located between the 31st and 35th block of Brighton Boulevard. Exciting news for wanna-be condo buyers who cannot find new inventory (as there isn't any). finding the space that fits who you are

Go Big or Go Home ~ Bold colors for your front door.

Without fail a cold wintry day makes me want to feather my nest. While hunkered down at home watching the white, calm quiet of snow falling I start trolling for ideas to make my home even more "me" before the holidays.

I have always been struck by bold front door colors. While in Scotland about a decade ago, I was charmed by the array of beautifully brightly painted front doors. A cheery smile against a mostly gray and green backdrop. Increasingly I am seeing homeowners taking a leap of faith and painting their front door something bold and lovely. Just the front door, leaving the rest of the home coordinated but not matching the punch of the door color.

Thinking about sprucing up your home before the holidays? As I am in residential real estate here in Denver, I get to see new trends in decorating all the time. I am loving the greys I am seeing being used as the new neutral. I see less and less of the builder beige and decorator white and more of this rich, warm grey. It feels sophisticated and current, while not being so new that it feels unfriendly. What I love about it is that you can make this neutral be as modern or traditional as you like ~ it really goes both ways!! Play upon the tonal elements or add bright colors in accessories which will really pop. This article shares how to choose a grey, or a green (yes, a new one. Top Ten Places to Work From “Home”

We all need to have a go to place from time-to-time, when we need to work, but perhaps your home isn’t quiet enough, or your office desk isn’t the right environment. I have compiled a list of my Top Ten “Home” Office work locations. Go ahead and change it up ~ you might be inspired! Most offer free WiFi. I can often be found scouring new listings for my clients, finding them the perfect home while visiting one of the fabulous establishments listed below.

1. Common Grounds Coffeehouse, 2139 E 44^th Avenue. Common Grounds Coffeehouse has been providing a community gathering place for North Denver for over 20 years. The Sunnyside neighborhood is truly a melting pot ~ it’s history of hardworking immigrants from all over the world is the kind of vibe you feel at Common Grounds. Located in the “Radiator Shop” building, it is spacious and gregarious. Like walking into your best friend’s kitchen and pulling up a chair.

2. Union Station : 1225 Seventeenth Street.  Have you been to visit the newly reopened Union Station? It’s challenging to describe just how breathtaking the new space is. The original train station elements have remained intact while updating the facility for today’s needs. The large central terminal is light and bright, with lots of large sofas, tables  and free wifi ~ a super place to grab a coffee (Pig Train) or a cocktail (The Terminal Bar and The Cooper Lounge).

3. Downpours Coffee: 3937 Tennyson Street. A most delicious, artfully crafted cup of coffee awaits you. Also recommended are the delectable handmade pastries and nibbles. Tennyson Street is the new local main-street type retail area, still chock full of independent small business. You’ll be in the company of other self-employed folks here, and the staff is friendly.

4. Mangiamo Pronto:  1601 17^th Street. Located on the corner of 17^th and Wazee in the lodo neighborhood, Mangiamo Pronto is an Italian coffee shop and bistro, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner featuring delicious egg dishes, paninis and pizzettis, pasta, gelato and drinks too! The space is bright, the staff is friendly, and the food, if you’re so inclined, delicious.

5. Crema: 2962 Larimer St. Craving a more industrial chic feel? Then stop by Crema. The creamiest smooth coffee, mouthwatering entrees, and industrial cool décor.

6. Gallop Café: 2401 W 32^nd Ave. A long time neighborhood favorite, this corner café and restaurant has a liquor license ~ so if you’re craving a masterpiece of a Bloody Mary, Gallop serves one, with a short glass of PBR. Breakfast and lunch entrées are delicious and innovative. Indoor and outdoor café seating is available.

7. Huckleberry Roasters: 4301 Pecos Street. Two friends create a space combining their passion for community, music and coffee. A belief that a coffee shop can be a cornerstone of a strong community. It’s a cool space on the west side of town.

8. Thump: 1201 E 13^th Ave. With locations in Denver and Bend, Oregon, Thump is almost library-like in it’s quiet atmosphere in which to get your work done.

9.  Black Eye: 3408 Navajo Street. With the roll up garage door front, tile backsplash, distressed wood furniture, this space is inviting and nostalgic.

10. Steam Espresso Bar: 1801 S Pearl Street. Platt Park is home to this phenomenal coffee bar. Cutting edge brewing and sustainably raised coffee make this a come back fave.

Love neighborhoods with an industrial feel? Then you will be smitten with Denver's RiNo neighborhood. RiNo properties are creating quite the buzz in town and for good reason ~ the amenities abound. Here are a few favorites and if you'd like to see them on a map, click here!

1. The Butcher Block Café

The Butcher Block Cafe has been family owned for 30 years. The three Michel brothers came to Denver from North Dakota in 1979 and were committed to opening a restaurant that would reflect the small diners they grew up loving. Hailing from New Jersey, I too have the same diner craving from time to time. Great home cooking with small town charm. Try the cinnamon rolls ~ gooey and drenched in butter, they will bring you back again and again. 

2. The Yoga Mat

Owner + Human Erin Hardy opened The Yoga Mat in 2010, her mission being to create a Denver yoga studio connecting like-minded folks through the practice of yoga, wellness, and combined creativity. Erin believes that unrolling your mat creates healthier and happier people; less grumpy people means less icky stuff in the world. One “om” at a time, beginners and experts alike reconnect their neighbors and bring balance to body and mind. Erin says, “Choosing to live a conscious, healthy lifestyle is hard but it’s clearly a darn good idea.” Small classes (18 max) allow the instructors to focus on alignment, anatomy and the use of props to ensure maximum benefits.

3. Hutch and Spoon

Owner/Chef Tracy Zimmer created Hutch and Spoon with a desire to offer meals and snacks that stimulate both the palate as well as the local economy. Creating community in a developing neighborhood is a passion here, and as much as possible local ingredients are incorporated into the menu. A great place to unwind, connect with friends and take a moment to enjoy your food and friends ~ it’s a great place to visit after a class at The Yoga Mat!

4. Plinth Gallery

Ceramic artist Jonathan Kaplan has worked in and around the Denver ceramics scene for many years. As proprietor of the Ceramic Design Group in Steamboat Springs, he served many clients along the Front Range. After working in the clay-ware manufacturing business for over 15 years, he moved to Denver in 2006 to open Plinth Gallery. 

There is a long and storied history of ceramic manufacturing in the region. Yet in spite of this vibrant clay art history along the Front Range, there had been no gallery devoted exclusively to fine ceramics. Jonathan found a home for Plinth Gallery in a once bland, rectangular building that formerly housed the “Acapulco Smoke Shop”. The building had been vacant for some time, and after a three-year renovation project it was re-introduced as an innovative architectural structure and pristine exhibition space for artists.

Plinth Gallery’s vision is to showcase fine ceramic art, as well as provide an educational forum for the introduction of clay arts to our community. The Gallery provides an intimate and ever-changing exhibition space for outstanding ceramic forms, whether uniquely sculptural or purely functional; and by artists both newly emerging, and the very well-recognized. 

5. The Source

The Source is Denver’s brand new indoor market and home to many new and exciting business ventures. Currently there are two fabulous restaurants inside.Comida, offering Mexican Street food (think small tacos and amazing drinks) and Acorn as well as craft brewers Crooked Stave Artisans. The center of the 1880’s former foundry building is occupied by the CapRock Farm Bar. There is coffee from Boxcar, cheeseand specialty foods from Mondo Market, curated spirits and wines from the Proper Pour, bread from Babette’s Artisan Breads, whole animal butchery from MeatHead, flowers from Beet & Yarrow, and produce from Americanum Provisions.

6. MidMod Mall

ModMod Mall  RETRO Consignment is a unique design and retail store selling old and new, specializing in modern, contemporary and vintage furnishings and finishes. Their new location on Brighton Boulevard offers a large open warehouse space with lots of light in which to display some fine vintage treasures.

7. Infinite Monkey Theorem

The Infinite Monkey Theorem represents a counter culture in wine making. No vineyard. No pretense. Opened in 2008 Infinite Monkey Theorem is an urban winery operated by one mad scientist working out of a back alley in RiNo. Infinite Monkey Theorem buys the best grapes and makes ridiculously good wine. Their concept is to focus on the variables that really matter: use the best grapes, harvest them at their peak, nurturing each batch of juice as it becomes wine, and get to know the people who drink it. The proprieters also decided to get rid of the variables that don’t matter: the vineyard location, the rolling hills, and the tasting room covered in granite and marble. The wines are not only expressions of the local fruit, the process, and the personality of the winemaker, but also expressions of the people drinking the wine. It is a product born out of the community and thus representative of the community.

8. City Bark

A full service pet center, City Bark is a loving and warm place for your furry companions when you need a hand. With four separate play areas and outdoor dog park with a swimming pool, your dog will be delighted for a play day or overnight stay. Lots of supervised play time and human interaction ~ you just can’t ask for a better spot for your pooch. City Bark also offers Self-Wash Tubs by the hour, Doggie and Kitty grooming and Behavior Modification/Training. 

9. Plus + Gallery

Plus Gallery has enriched Denver’s contemporary art scene since 2001, providing one of the leading, reputable platforms for prestigious artist representation and exhibitions of note in the region. The gallery recently relocated to the corner of 25th and Larimer in North Downtown Denver, into a unique renovation of a remnant parcel of the Benjamin Moore Paint Factory. This singular redevelopment adds a two-story gallery space to the dramatic architecture of the historic Benjamin Moore complex, serving as a visual anchor for the entrance to the Upper Larimer corridor and River North Arts District. 

10. Epic Brewing

Epic Brewing Company opened in Salt Lake City, Utah with six fermentation tanks giving it the flexibility to create a variety of small batch, artisanal beer. Within a few short months, Epic began earning medals for its beers domestically and internationally. Three years later, in 2013, Epic expanded its brewery operations into Colorado by opening a second brewery in the River North district of downtown Denver.

The Denver brewery offered enough space to support growing national distribution, expansion of the popular barrel aged beer program and the introduction of a line of sour beers. Along with these improvements the addition of a “proper” tap room featuring 25 taps was a long awaited realization, allowing Epic to feature its substantial beer selection on draught. Despite the rapid expansion and increase in production volume, Epic Brewing has stayed committed to its founding principal of small batch, artisanal beer. Every batch released in the Elevated and Exponential series is numbered, stamped, and release information is published online. Currently brewing 39 plus beers Epic believes there is a beer for every person and every occasion.
